This work is called a Drawing, but it should not be considered in terms of the conventional standards of painting. It is not a reproduction of the outside world apprehended by a special sensibility or a reflection of the artist’s mental landscape or esthetic awareness.
The marks in this drawing record the repetitive beat of the heart, pulsing at approximately 67 beats per minute and seeming to continue forever. Sasaki lays down traces of red ink in response to the beating of his own heart, which will continue as long as he is alive. The panel is covered with an accumulation of transitory moments that appear and disappear with a subtle rhythm. It frames a certain area, cutting out a segment of the artist’s action/time that has been continued for over eight years and will continue from now on.
The lines repeated at small intervals convey a sense of awkward friction coming from the tip of the pen as it touches the surface. The lines are inscribed through movements of the body, and these inscribed lines provide feedback to the body, creating an interactive loop. These lines are traces of movements made through repetitive physical touch that move toward an area beyond consciousness and thought. The surface covered with these simple but beautiful lines reflects a vibration passing through the body. The lines repeated with subtle variations reverberate quietly with an almost musical effect in a space that includes the viewer.  (2003)

- - - SASAKI fills aluminum panels from top to bottom with symbolic lines in red ink. As one might imagine from the title of his three-part work, TOGETHER, Heartbeat Drawing for 24 Hours, no.1, no.2, no.3, he uses a linear pattern to record the beating of his heart. The pulse of human life provides the background for his representation constructed of seemingly mechanical signs. The artist’s obsessive action reflects the obsessiveness of nature but also reveals the fragility of life that will end if this pulsing line is cut off for even a moment. When I saw this work for the first time, I was not aware of its meaning, but I found it more attractive than any other work in the exhibition because of the intelligent rhythm and mysterious atmosphere produced by the interaction of the mechanical texture of the aluminum panel and the warm red color. - - -

- - - SASAKI’s heartbeat drawings are endless repetitions of waveform lines that are literally synchronized with actual heartbeats. This is an extremely mechanical approach, but these drawings directly reflect the rhythm of life while being entirely physical. The red wave forms that fill the pictorial space are drawn on a mirror-finish aluminum plate. Viewers can see their own image floating in the space beyond the overall layer of the subtly vibrating lines. If the color red is an illusion to blood, the pictorial surface like semi-transparent red lace expresses a splendid but uncanny sensuality. I have mentioned the infinite repetition in these drawings, but time here is embodied in action. Someday there will be a final drawing in which the line is broken off. This is the though to which this work ultimately leads. - - -

- - - The endless chain of pulses in red ink moves back and forth in synchrony with the artist’s own hearbeat. This series represents the basic condition of painting, always in a state of danger. The space enclosed by four sides only shows a fraction of the world it represents. The world spreads out beyond the end of the heartbeat. That is why it was necessary to paint it on a metallic mirror surface. - - -

[TOGETHER, Heartbeat Drawing for 24 Hours, no.1, no.2, no.3]から想像がつくように、 心臓の鼓動を図線化したものである。
